Description
Washington Street and the corner of Mathewson Street, photographed in 1978. The Shepard Building, pictured at the left, was home to the Shepard Department store. At its height the company occupied surrounding buildings, expanding to cover two-blocks. In the early 1960s parts of the downtown shopping district restricted vehicle traffic in an effort to lure shoppers back from suburban shopping areas that were becoming popular. Although the efforts were unsuccessful, the Providence Renaissance has revived the area with restoration for shops, restaurants, parking and satellite campuses for local colleges.
