Title

Levittown Shop-a-Rama

Description

The Levittown Shop-a-Rama, originally called the Levittown Shopping Center, was a pedestrian shopping mall, planned and developed by William Levitt, the then-president of Levitt and Sons, a real estate development agency responsible for building the heterogeneous towns and communities of Levittown, New York and Levittown, Pennsylvania, as well as various other real estate and community projects. The shopping mall opened on October 15th, 1953, and was at that time the largest pedestrian shopping mall east of the Mississippi.

The Levittown Shop-a-Rama and its 6-000-car parking lots resided on a 60-acre plot. The mall was comprised of two L-shaped strips of shops and various courtyards with trees and benches. Popular stores included Pomeroys, J.C. Penny, Singer Sewing Center, Levine Fabrics, Woolworths, Sears, and more. The mall hosted traveling circuses and was known for having elephant rides, was home to an annual Easter Day Parade and a Miss Levitteen competition, and even provided a stage for John F. Kennedy during the 1960 Presidential campaign.
