Title
Bristol: Poppasquash Point and Point Pleasant (Aerial)
Description
Poppasquash Point in Bristol, RI is home to the English-inspired, Tudor-revival, country estate known as Point Pleasant and Point Pleasant Farm. It overlooks the Bristol Harbor and provides a view of Narragansett Bay. The estate is of particular significance to the history of Bristol because the families of Brown, Herreshoff and Rockwell spent time there.
The Herreshoff family owned much of the land on Poppasquash Point. John Brown Herreshoff was a Bristol boatbuilder who began a business partnership with his brother Nathanael Greene Herreshof in 1878. Their firm was named the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, and between 1893 and 1914, their firm produced seven of the most powerful racing sloops (single-masted sailboats) in the world. The success of the firm and power of the boat designs brought prestige to the Brown Herreshoff name and also to Bristol, RI.
Another familiar to Point Pleasant is Charles B. Rockwell and his family. Rockwell was a wealthy and successful director of the Cranston Worsted Mill in Cranston, RI -- in his youth, he was supposedly friends with Nathanael Greene Herreshof's sons. He eventually purchased the land from the Herreshoff family and began residence there with his family. Charles' son, Charles B Rockwell, Jr., went on to finance Bristol's Rockwell Elementary School, this giving it its name.
