A view of the expansive United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The Capitol building covers approximately four acres of land and is host to 3-5 million visitors every year. First built in 1793, the home of the Senate and House of Representatives has undergone many changes in over 200 years of existence. It was destroyed in 1814 when British troops set fire to the building during the War of 1812. The Capitol was rebuilt over a period of several years, yet restoration and expansion have continued throughout the life of the sturcture.
