The museum is named for its founding donor, Joseph H. Hirshhorn. Hirshhorn immigrated from Latvia when he was only eight years old to the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. Hirshhorn became a financier, but he was also known for his philanthropy and his extensive collection of modern art.
