Rehovot: Weizmann House
Description
Designed by Erich Mendelsohn, the Weizmann house was built in 1936 as a private home for Dr. Chaim Weizmann and his wife Dr. Vera Weizmann. Both being scientists, they chose to build their home next to the Daniel Sieff Research Institute, which is now known as the Weizmann Institute of Science. The dwelling was modeled to adapt to its surrounding environment, culture, and climate.
The walls are extremely thick and consist of many layers. In the center of the home, there is a large, spiral staircase that protrudes from one of the outer walls to give a tower effect. Three rectangles make up the base, all with entryways to the center courtyard which contains a beautiful garden and a swimming pool.
